Two vehicles, one ice cap and a pot of hot chocolate
You meet in the upper Gullfoss car park, where a highland bus is waiting on the far
side from the cafe. That bus runs the Kjolur road up into the highlands to the operator's
base, and the road is the first thing that tells you the scale of where you are going.
At the base you change to the Sleipnir truck, which is the point of the day. Eight
wheels, a cabin high enough to need a ladder, and a driver who takes it straight out onto
Langjokull. Travellers describe the driver zig-zagging between crevasses on the way, which
is less alarming than it sounds and more interesting than a straight line.
The stop on the ice runs about an hour and three quarters. Crampons come out, you walk
about on a glacier, and there is hot chocolate and kleinur served up there with the whole
ice cap around you. If the snow is right there is a plastic toboggan and a mini-golf
course, which is exactly as odd as it sounds.
Then the truck back to the base, the bus back down to Gullfoss, and you have your

The three and a half hours, step by step
Meet. The upper Gullfoss car park, opposite the cafe, fifteen minutes early.
Highland bus. About half an hour up the Kjolur road to the base.
The Sleipnir truck. Guided drive out onto the ice cap.
On the ice. About an hour and three quarters: hot chocolate, kleinur, crampons, sledding or glacier golf if the snow allows.
Back. Truck to the base, bus down to Gullfoss.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book this if
You are travelling with young children, nobody in your party holds a driving licence, or you would rather be on a glacier than working a throttle for an hour. It is also the shortest and cheapest way onto this ice cap for anyone already driving the Golden Circle, because you park once and rejoin your own car.

Where you meet, and how to find it
The meeting point is the upper Gullfoss waterfall car park, with the transfer bus parked opposite the café. It is free to park, it is signposted, and the operator asks you to arrive fifteen minutes early.
This is the southern approach to the ice cap. The western one starts at Húsafell, an hour and forty minutes from Reykjavik on a different road, and that is where the ice tunnel tours check in.
Gullfoss is about two hours from Reykjavik on route 35, paved the whole way, and there is no transfer from the city in this fare. Journey times and the last fuel are on where tours start.
Know before you go
There is no transfer from Reykjavik. The tour begins and ends at Gullfoss, so you need your own way there.
Minimum age four, with booster seats available on request. A child seat is named in the exclusions, so ask when you book.
Bring a camera, sunglasses, warm clothing and waterproof shoes or boots. Crampons are provided.
Sledding and glacier golf run only when snow conditions allow. Treat them as a bonus during the stop rather than something to book for.
The tour can be cancelled for weather at short notice, with an alternative date or a full refund offered.
The transfer time from Gullfoss to the truck is inside the three and a half hours, so the stop on the ice is a shorter slice than the headline suggests.

No. Nobody on this tour drives anything: the highland bus and the Sleipnir truck both come with a driver. It is the option to take if your party has no licence between it, along with the ice tunnel from Húsafell.

How long are we actually on the ice?

Is the sledding guaranteed?
No. Sledding and glacier golf both depend on the weather and the snow on the day, so treat them as a bonus rather than a reason to book. The hot chocolate and kleinur on the ice are the part that always happens.
Does it come from Reykjavik?
No. This one starts and finishes at the upper Gullfoss car park, which is why it costs what it does. If you need collecting from the city, take the Golden Circle day instead.
