Your day, from the kerb to the ice
The coach collects you between about half past eight and nine, either at the BSI
terminal or at your hotel, and heads east out of the city. Thingvellir comes first, where
the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, and it gets about half an hour.
Geysir is next and gets an hour, which is enough to watch Strokkur go up several times
rather than once. Then the road turns north and climbs, and the tarmac runs out.
Three hours go at the glacier. The first is gear and briefing at base camp, the second
is on the snowmobile, and the third is the transfer at either end of it. Two people share
each machine and you can swap halfway, so both of you drive and both of you get to look
around.
Gullfoss comes on the way back, at about half an hour, and then the coach runs you into
Reykjavik. Ten hours door to door, and you have driven none of it.

Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book this if
You have one free day, no car and want the country's best-known route with the glacier attached rather than instead of it. It is also the one to take if you are travelling with a child from six, because the ride is a passenger seat and the rest of the day is a coach with somewhere to sit.
Book something else if
You are already driving the Golden Circle yourself, in which case meeting the monster truck at Gullfoss buys the glacier without paying for a transfer you do not need. If nobody in your party holds a driving licence, take the ice tunnel from Húsafell instead.

Where you meet, and how the pickup works
The BSI bus terminal sits just south of the city centre, a short walk from most of the Reykjavik 101 district, and it is the operator's own hub. If you have booked hotel pickup instead, be outside at the start of your window rather than the end of it.
This day approaches the glacier from the south. If you would rather come at it from the west, the tunnel tours check in at Húsafell instead, which is a different road and a much shorter day.

Know before you go
A valid driving licence is required to drive a snowmobile. Passengers do not need one, and there must be at least one licensed driver per two people booked.
Two people sit on one snowmobile. A single-rider upgrade, where offered, is arranged and paid at base camp rather than at checkout.
Children aged five and under are not permitted. From six they travel as passengers.
Food and drink are outside the fare, and there is no shop on the glacier. Buy something at Geysir or bring it with you.
The operator can cancel the snowmobile leg for conditions on the ice even after the coach has left the city. If that happens you are refunded for that part.
You need nothing warm of your own beyond a waterproof outer layer and decent shoes: everything else is issued.

How much of the ten hours am I actually on the glacier?
Three, and one of those three is riding. The rest of the day is the coach, the three Golden Circle stops and the transfer up to base camp. That is the honest ratio and it is the same on every combination day of this length.
Do I need a driving licence?
To drive a snowmobile, yes, and you need to carry it. To ride behind somebody who has one, no. The operator asks for one licensed driver per two people booked, so a couple needs one licence between them.
Can children come?
From six, as passengers. Children of five and under are not permitted on this tour. No child drives a snowmobile at any age, whatever the tour. The age rules across every option are set out on Langjokull with kids.
What if the weather stops the snowmobiling?
It can, and this operator reserves the right to drop the glacier leg even after departure. You are refunded for the part that did not run. Booking the glacier early in your trip leaves you somewhere to move it to.
Is there anywhere to eat?
Not on the glacier. There is a cafeteria at Geysir and a cafe at Gullfoss, both of which the day passes through. Food and drink are named in this tour's exclusions, so plan to buy at a stop or carry it.
Is this the one with the most time on the ice?
Of the days that start in Reykjavik, close to it. If time on the ice is what you are buying rather than the route around it, the monster-truck day from Gullfoss gives about an hour and three quarters up there in a three-and-a-half-hour trip.
